Kyrgyzstan’s Oscar© 2022 Entry for Best International Feature: ‘Shambala’ Written & Directed by Artykpai Suyundukov

Shambala, the apotheosis of a little boy who reaches the highest point in the development of belief as taught to him by his grandfather.

Based on the novella The White Ship, by Kyrgyz writer Chingiz Aitmatov, Shambala tells the story of a lonely, impressionable, seven-year-old boy who lives in a protected forest, high in the mountains, with his grandfather, step-grandmother, aunt and uncle. He spends his time exploring and listening to legends from his grandfather, in particular tales about the sacred Mother Deer. He witnesses the myths and folklore as they conflict with the harsh reality of the world around him.

The beauty of Kyrgyzstan and its ancient beliefs is told in a spectacular style and the seven year old actor carries the story.
