Filmmakers for the Prosecution

To mark November anniversary of Nuremberg Trial, Sandra Schulberg presents FILMMAKERS FOR THE PROSECUTION at Catholic University Law School in Washington DC and University of Minnesota / Duluth

November marks the anniversary of Kristallnacht (November 9, 1938) and the start of the first Nuremberg trial (November 20, 1945).

November marks the anniversary of Kristallnacht (November 9, 1938) and the start of the first Nuremberg trial (November 20, 1945). The persecution of Jews in Germany didn’t begin with the looting and burning of synagogues and shops on Kristallnacht, but they marked a deadly turning point that led ultimately to the campaign to annihilate the Jews of Europe under the Nazi regime. Tragically, the issues of persecution and war crimes are still very much with us.

Prosecuting Crimes Against Humanity & Crimes Against the Peace
The International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg (IMT), which began November 20, 1945, serves as a landmark in the history of the rule of law — the first attempt to prosecute “Crimes Against Humanity,” as well as to define and prosecute the “Crime of Aggression,” also known as “Crimes Against Peace — the illegal use of armed force and the very act of making war.

Using Motion Pictures to Convict the Nazis — Another First
The IMT marked another milestone — the use of motion pictures as a form of legal evidence — as depicted in Jean-Christophe Klotz’s thrilling documentary, FILMMAKERS FOR THE PROSECUTION. adapted from my monogram and co-produced with wonderful colleagues at Zadig Productions and ARTE,

John Ford’s OSS unit — including my uncle Budd Schulberg and father Stuart Schulberg — uncovered Nazi film that they assembled and showed in the Nuremberg courtroom, along with footage shot by the Allied camera teams who documented the liberation of the concentration camps. These indelible images continue to shape our view of what came to be known as the Holocaust.
